Hardship Grants: Why They Do Not Exist, and What Does
Last verified:
The hardship grant does not exist. Not as a federal program, not under another name, not through a service that will find one for you. USA.gov says the government does not offer free money or grants to people for personal needs, and the FTC says no government agency will contact you about a grant out of the blue. Everything on this page is what is actually there instead, ordered by how fast it pays.
Know the scam first, because this search attracts it
The pattern is consistent enough to recognize in ten seconds. You are told you have been selected for an award, usually between $5,000 and $25,000. Then there is a fee before the money can be released, typically $150 to $700, called processing, delivery, insurance or application. Payment is demanded in gift cards, a cash reload card, a wire transfer or cryptocurrency, because none of those can be reversed. A common version arrives from a friend's hacked social media account saying they just received theirs.
Three tests, all from the FTC. Did they contact you first? Is there any fee at all? Can the payment be undone? A yes, a yes, and a no is a scam every time. The other version does not ask for money, it asks for your bank details so the grant can be deposited, and that is the more expensive one.
Applying through Grants.gov is free and the full list of federal opportunities is public, so anyone charging to find grants for you is charging for a database you can open yourself. Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Verified 2026-09-18.
What actually pays, ranked by speed
| Need | The real program | Roughly how fast |
|---|---|---|
| Food, right now | SNAP, with expedited screening | Days if you qualify for emergency processing |
| A phone | Lifeline | Days to about two weeks |
| Energy bill or shutoff | LIHEAP, crisis component | Days to weeks, and funds run out |
| Anything local | 211 | One call, same day |
| Rent | State, county or city funds | Weeks, and only where a program exists |
| Cash | TANF | Weeks, amount set by your state |
| The largest sum | EITC and Child Tax Credit | Tax season, and worth the wait |
Food is the fastest thing to fix
SNAP has an emergency track that most people never hear about. If your household has very little income and almost nothing on hand, your state is required to screen you for expedited service rather than making you wait out the ordinary timeline. Say the word expedited when you apply.
From 1 October 2026 the maximum monthly allotment in the 48 contiguous states is $306 for one person, $562 for two, $808 for three and $1,023 for four. Through 30 September 2026 it is $298, $546, $785 and $994. The asset limit for most households is $3,000, or $4,750 where a member is elderly or disabled. Every state runs its own application, and none of them charge.
WIC is separate and worth claiming alongside if anyone in the household is pregnant, recently gave birth, is breastfeeding, or is a child under five. Receiving Medicaid, SNAP or TANF usually makes you income-eligible for it automatically.
Energy bills, and the program that also fixes the house
LIHEAP pays heating and cooling bills and has a crisis component for shutoffs. Your state sets the income cut-off somewhere between 110% of the poverty guidelines at the bottom and the greater of 150% of the guidelines or 60% of state median income at the top. Apply the week your state's window opens, because this is a fixed pot and it empties.
States may also route part of their LIHEAP money into weatherization, and the Weatherization Assistance Program itself is separate, free, and often overlooked. It is not a check. A local agency comes and does the work: insulation, air sealing, windows and doors, heating and cooling equipment. You are automatically eligible if someone in the household received TANF or SSI cash assistance in the last twelve months. Renters qualify too, with the landlord's agreement, which makes it one of the very few programs of this kind that is not owner-only. Our home repair grants guide covers how it stacks with USDA's repair money.
Rent: the federal program you will be sent to has closed
A large amount of content still tells people in arrears to apply for federal Emergency Rental Assistance. Treasury's ERA2 period of performance ended on 30 September 2025, and grantees can no longer use those funds to help renters. Treasury now points people to an interagency housing portal instead.
What survives is local. Plenty of states, counties and cities run rental assistance with their own money, and some nonprofits hold emergency funds for rent and deposits. The only practical way to find what is live where you are is to dial 211, which is run by United Way and local nonprofits rather than the government, and is the single most useful phone call on this page. USA.gov also runs a helpline on 1-844-USAGOV1.
TANF is the closest thing to cash, and it is a state question
TANF is what most people mean by welfare, and it does pay cash. It is a block grant, so states set their own benefit levels, their own rules and mostly their own names for the program. The amount for an identical family varies enormously between states, which is why nobody can honestly publish a national figure. Federal money cannot support a family beyond 60 cumulative months, and some states run shorter clocks.
One protection worth knowing if you have young children. A single parent with a child under six meets the work requirement at 20 hours a week rather than 30, and cannot have assistance cut for refusing work when appropriate child care is not available within a reasonable distance. States have to tell you that exception exists. Our single parents guide goes through the rest of it.
The biggest number on this page is a tax refund
People in a crisis skip this because it does not feel like assistance, and it is usually the largest sum they will receive all year. For tax year 2026 the Earned Income Tax Credit reaches $4,427 with one qualifying child, $7,316 with two and $8,231 with three or more. The Child Tax Credit adds up to $2,200 per child, and $1,700 of that is refundable, meaning it comes back as money even when you owe no tax.
None of it arrives unless you file. If you did not file in a previous year because your income was low, you may still be able to claim it late. Free filing help exists through IRS Free File and volunteer tax assistance sites, and you should never pay a percentage of a refund to someone who offers to get it for you.
What the hardship grant sites are actually selling
Three business models sit behind those results, and it is worth naming them. The first sells access to a list of grants, which is Grants.gov reformatted, and Grants.gov is free. The second is a lead generator that collects your name, income and contact details and sells them on, which is why the calls start. The third is the outright fee scam described at the top.
The tell they all share is that none of them can name the program. Real help is specific. LIHEAP is a named program with a state office, an income rule and an application window. SNAP has published allotment figures that change every October. A hardship grant has none of that, because there is nothing behind it to describe.
If you have nothing at all today
- Dial 211. One call, and they know which local food pantries, utility funds and rent programs have money this week. Nothing else on this page is that current.
- Apply for SNAP and ask about expedited processing. It is the fastest federal thing that exists, and food freed up is money freed up.
- Call your utility before the shutoff, not after. Ask about LIHEAP crisis funds and about a payment arrangement in the same call. Reconnection costs more than staying connected.
- Get a phone sorted if that is a problem. Lifeline gives $0 service and it is one of the few benefits approved in days. Our free government phone guide covers it, and the eligibility check takes half a minute.
- File your taxes, even late, even with no income to speak of. The credits above are real money and a lot of people leave them unclaimed.

Common questions
Are free hardship grants for individuals real?
No. There is no federal hardship grant that pays cash to a person in financial difficulty. USA.gov states that the government does not offer free money or grants to people for personal needs, and the FTC says the government will not contact you out of the blue about a grant of any kind. Every site advertising a hardship grant is either selling a list, harvesting your details, or taking a fee for nothing.
What is the fastest real help if I have no money right now?
SNAP, because emergency processing exists. If your household has almost no income and cash on hand, your state must screen you for expedited service, which is decided far faster than ordinary applications. Then LIHEAP for energy bills, then 211 for local food, rent and utility funds. None of these charge anything to apply.
Is there still federal emergency rental assistance?
No. Treasury's ERA2 period of performance ended on 30 September 2025 and grantees can no longer use those funds to help renters. A lot of content still points people there. Some states, counties and cities run their own rental assistance with their own money, so the question is local, not federal. Dial 211 to find what is actually operating near you.
How much can I get from a hardship grant scam before I notice?
The pattern the FTC and Grants.gov describe is an award somewhere between $5,000 and $25,000 that never arrives, and a processing or delivery fee of roughly $150 to $700 that you pay first. They ask for gift cards, a cash reload card, a wire transfer or cryptocurrency, because none of those can be reversed. Some versions ask for your bank details to deposit the money instead, which is worse.
Does the government give money to pay off debt?
Not as a grant. No federal program hands an individual a lump sum to clear debt. What exists is bill-specific help, meaning LIHEAP for energy, local funds for rent, and nonprofit credit counseling for a repayment plan. Any advert for a government debt relief grant is either a scam or a loan wearing a costume.
What is the biggest amount of money I can actually claim?
For most working households it is the refundable tax credits, not any assistance program. The Earned Income Tax Credit reaches $8,231 for tax year 2026 with three or more qualifying children, and the Child Tax Credit adds up to $2,200 per child with $1,700 refundable. You have to file a return to receive any of it, and filing help is free.
