SNAP (food stamps) is the largest food assistance program in the US. About 42 million people use it. 36 states and DC use broad-based categorical eligibility with a higher gross limit, most of them 200% of poverty (USDA chart, June 2026); seven states use no BBCE at all. Your state's rule is on its state page. Elderly and disabled households skip the gross test and face only the net test.

What changed under the 2025 law
The reconciliation law signed July 4, 2025 rewrote several SNAP rules, and USDA told states to apply most of them at once. The work-requirement time limit now runs to age 64 instead of 54, the exemptions for veterans, homeless people and former foster youth are gone, and the parent exemption requires a child under 14 in the household. Internet service no longer counts toward the shelter deduction. Refugees, asylees and most parolees lost eligibility. From October 2027 states begin paying a share of benefit costs tied to their payment error rate, which is why verification is tightening now. Each state page shows that state's error rate and tier.
Applying, and surviving the interview call
SNAP is state-run: apply through your state's benefits portal, then complete a short interview call. Approval targets ~30 days (7 days expedited for very low income). Your EBT card arrives by mail and reloads monthly. For the interview, have four things at hand: ID for the head of household, proof of income for everyone who earns (last 30 days), your rent/mortgage amount, and utility bills. The interviewer uses the last two for deductions that raise your benefit, so "forgetting" them costs you money every month. Missed the call? Nothing is denied yet. Call back the number on the letter within the window it names.

What's the SNAP income limit?

Is SNAP the same as EBT?
SNAP is the program; EBT is the debit-style card the benefits load onto. "Food stamps" is the old name for the same program.
