Two paths in — income or program enrollment. You only need one, and the program path is faster because the National Verifier confirms it automatically.
Path 1: A program you're already on
- SNAP / Food Stamps (EBT)
- Medicaid
- SSI (Supplemental Security Income)

If any apply, you're eligible today — skip the income math and pick a carrier.

What trips people up
The household rule (one benefit per address unless genuinely separate economies), stale documents (award letters older than 12 months are rejected), and name mismatches (apply with your name exactly as it appears on the benefit record). Our provider pages list each carrier's specific rejection patterns and fixes.
Common questions
What income counts for Lifeline?
Gross household income — everyone in the household, before taxes, from all sources (wages, SSA/SSI, unemployment, pensions). Programs look at current income, not last year's tax return, so a recent job loss can qualify you now.
What documents prove eligibility?
Fastest: a program award letter (SNAP, Medicaid, SSI) dated within 12 months. For income: last 30 days of pay stubs, your most recent 1040, or a benefits statement. Name and address must match your application exactly.
Two people at one address — can both get Lifeline?
Only if they're separate economic households (don't share income and expenses). Each files the USAC Household Worksheet. Roommates usually qualify separately; spouses don't.
Does Lifeline check credit or immigration status?
No credit check ever. Lifeline is generally exempt from public-charge decisions, but verify your specific case with official USCIS guidance or a legal aid organization.
