The Lifeline path (works today)
Qualify for Lifeline (income or SNAP/Medicaid/SSI), pick a carrier whose plan includes tethering. TruConnect advertises hotspot data on its free plans, and your phone becomes the hotspot at $0. To check whether a plan tethers before applying: open the carrier's plan page, search for "hotspot" or "tethering," and note the cap. Hotspot data is usually a separate, smaller bucket than your regular data, and running a laptop through it drains it far faster than phone browsing does. Already enrolled? School & library lending
