Grants for Veterans: The VA Money That Is Real, With FY2026 Amounts

Last verified:

Veterans are the one group for whom the phrase "government grants" is not a myth. The VA pays several outright grants to individuals, some of them six figures, and publishes the amounts each October. The problem is the opposite of the usual one: the real programs get buried under sites selling "veteran grant" lists that mix them with loans, scholarships and things that do not exist. This page separates them, with the FY2026 amounts and the VA pages they come from, and covers the rule that stops anyone from charging you to apply.

The grants the VA pays to you

GrantFY2026 amountFor
Specially Adapted Housing (SAH)Up to $126,526Buying, building or adapting a home for certain severe service-connected disabilities; usable up to six times in a lifetime
Special Home Adaptation (SHA)Up to $25,350Adapting a home for other qualifying service-connected disabilities
Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA)Up to $50,961 (SAH-eligible) or $9,100 (SHA-eligible)Adapting a family member's home you are living in temporarily
HISA (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations)$6,800 lifetime, or $2,000Medically necessary home changes; $6,800 for service-connected conditions or a 50%+ rating, $2,000 otherwise
Automobile allowanceUp to $27,074.99One-time payment toward a vehicle for certain service-connected losses, plus adaptive equipment
Clothing allowance$1,053.19 a yearClothing damaged by a prosthetic, orthopedic device or prescribed skin medication; must qualify by August 1

SAH, SHA and TRA from va.gov's disability housing grants page (FY2026). Automobile allowance effective October 1, 2025; clothing allowance effective December 1, 2025. HISA limits from the VA prosthetics page, last updated February 2025.

Every one of these is tied to a service-connected disability, most of them to specific losses such as the use of limbs or sight. They are not general-purpose. What they share is that the VA pays the money to you or on your behalf, you do not repay it, and the application is free through va.gov or a Veterans Service Organization.

The pension, which behaves like a grant for low-income wartime veterans

The Veterans Pension is a needs-based monthly payment for wartime veterans with limited income, whether or not they have a service-connected disability. It works by topping your countable income up to a maximum annual pension rate. From December 1, 2025 that rate is $17,441 for a veteran with no dependents, and $29,093 for a veteran with no dependents who qualifies for Aid and Attendance, the addition for those who need help with daily activities. The net worth limit for December 1, 2025 through November 30, 2026 is $163,699. Our veterans benefits page explains the difference between this pension and disability compensation, which trips up more applicants than anything else.

Education: the GI Bill numbers for 2026-27

The Post-9/11 GI Bill is the largest single transfer to veterans and it is not a grant you apply for on a grant site. For August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027 the private and foreign school tuition cap is $30,908.34, up from $29,920.95 the year before; public in-state tuition is paid in full. The monthly housing allowance is based on the Basic Allowance for Housing for an E-5 with dependents at the school's ZIP code.

Two facts that older guides get wrong. Since the Supreme Court's decision in Rudisill v. McDonough on April 16, 2024, veterans with separate qualifying periods of service for the Montgomery and Post-9/11 GI Bills can receive both, up to 48 months combined, and the VA says there is no longer a deadline to apply because it is reviewing eligible files automatically. And Veteran Readiness and Employment (Chapter 31), which pays for training and can pay a subsistence allowance, has no time limit at all for veterans discharged on or after January 1, 2013; it requires a service-connected rating of at least 10%.

Business: what the SBA does and does not do for veterans

The SBA does not pay grants to veteran-owned businesses. It funds 31 Veterans Business Outreach Centers that provide free workshops, training, counseling and mentorship. It runs Boots to Business, a course delivered on military installations as part of the Transition Assistance Program, with a Reboot version for veterans of any era. And it runs the Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business program: the government aims to award at least 5% of federal contracting dollars to certified SDVOSBs each year, and certification moved from the VA to the SBA's VetCert on January 1, 2023. It is free. We could not verify whether the SBA's reduced 7(a) guaranty fees for veteran borrowers are in force for FY2026; the SBA's FY2026 fee notice was not readable at our last check, so ask the lender rather than assume.

Housing emergencies: the number to call

The National Call Center for Homeless Veterans is 877-424-3838, free, confidential and open 24 hours. It connects to two programs that pay money on a veteran's behalf. Supportive Services for Veteran Families funds about 680 community organizations, at $855 million a year, to keep low-income veteran families housed, including temporary financial assistance for rent, utilities, security deposits and moving costs. HUD-VASH pairs a HUD Housing Choice Voucher with VA case management. The Grant and Per Diem program that also shows up in searches funds transitional housing providers, not veterans directly. Home repairs beyond the disability grants above are covered on home repair grants.

The fee rule, and the "claim sharks"

The VA's wording is unambiguous: "It's unlawful for anyone to charge a fee for preparing an initial claim." Accredited attorneys and claims agents may charge only after the VA issues an initial decision, for appeals, supplemental claims and higher-level reviews, and the VA's Office of General Counsel presumes a contingency fee of 20% or less of past-due benefits to be reasonable; anything over a third has to be justified with clear and convincing evidence. The red flags the VA lists are upfront fees, high-pressure tactics, promises of a rating, and aggressive outreach by mail, phone or online. Check any representative in the VA accreditation search before signing, and report offenders to VSAFE.gov or 1-833-388-7233.

One piece of pending law belongs here because it is widely misreported as passed. The PLUS for Veterans Act of 2025 (H.R. 1656), which would change the rules on who may charge for claims help, was introduced on February 27, 2025 and referred to subcommittee. At our last check no version beyond the introduced bill existed. The rule above is the rule in force.

State benefits

Every state runs its own veterans department with property-tax exemptions, tuition waivers, state veterans homes and sometimes cash bonuses for wartime service. The VA maintains a directory of all 55 state and territorial veterans affairs offices; it is the first stop for anything with your state's name on it, and none of it requires a paid intermediary.

Common questions

Are there government grants for veterans?

Yes, and unlike most 'grants for' searches, several are real cash grants paid by the VA to the veteran: the Specially Adapted Housing grant (up to $126,526 in FY2026), the Special Home Adaptation grant (up to $25,350), the HISA home-alteration grant ($6,800 or $2,000 lifetime), the automobile allowance (up to $27,074.99) and the annual clothing allowance ($1,053.19). All are tied to service-connected disabilities. There is no general 'veteran grant' for bills or a business.

How much is the VA Pension in 2026?

The maximum annual pension rate from December 1, 2025 is $17,441 for a veteran with no dependents, rising to $29,093 with the Aid and Attendance addition. The pension pays the difference between your countable income and that rate. The net worth limit for December 1, 2025 through November 30, 2026 is $163,699.

Does the SBA give grants to veteran-owned businesses?

No. The SBA runs 31 Veterans Business Outreach Centers for free counseling, the Boots to Business course, and the SDVOSB contracting program, which aims at least 5% of federal contract dollars at certified service-disabled veteran-owned businesses. Certification moved from the VA to SBA's VetCert on January 1, 2023 and is free. Loans are loans.

Can someone charge me to file a VA claim?

Not for an initial claim. The VA states it is unlawful for anyone to charge a fee for preparing an initial claim. Only VA-accredited attorneys and agents may charge, and only after the VA's initial decision, for appeals and reviews; a fee of 20% or less of past-due benefits is presumed reasonable. Check any representative in the VA's accreditation search. The PLUS for Veterans Act, which would change claims-fee rules, was introduced in February 2025 and had not been enacted at our last check.

What is the fastest VA help if I am about to lose my housing?

The National Call Center for Homeless Veterans, 877-424-3838, free and 24 hours. It routes to Supportive Services for Veteran Families, whose grantees can pay rent arrears, utilities, security deposits and moving costs directly, and to HUD-VASH, which combines a Housing Choice Voucher with VA case management.
