The Pension vs. compensation distinction, spelled out
Two different VA benefits confuse almost everyone here. Veterans Pension is the needs-based benefit for wartime veterans with limited income, and it's on Lifeline's automatic-qualifier list, so receiving it means your household qualifies for a free phone with no income math. VA disability compensation is service-connected and not needs-based, so it isn't on the automatic list. But it counts as ordinary income under the 135% limit, which many veteran households still fall under. If you receive compensation and aren't sure, the 30-second checker settles it.
Where to apply for each
VA benefits: va.gov or a Veterans Service Organization (VSOs help file claims free, so never pay a claims consultant a percentage). The free phone: any Lifeline carrier below, with your Pension award letter as proof if the automatic match doesn't fire. State benefits: your state's department of veterans affairs lists property-tax and tuition programs.
