Grants for Women: What Is Real, What Is Not, and What Pays

Last verified:

The search results for this phrase are a wall of lists. Fifty grants for women, a hundred grants for women, grants for women over 40. Almost none of them are grants, and the ones that are go to organizations. This page starts from what Grants.gov itself says about individuals, then works through the federal money that does reach women, with the 2026 figures and the pages they come from.

What Grants.gov says about grants to individuals

The government's own grant portal answers the question in one sentence on its eligibility page: "Although there are many funding opportunities on Grants.gov, few are available to individuals, and none provide personal financial assistance." Its fraud page adds that federal grants "are rarely awarded to individuals seeking personal benefits, and applying for a grant is completely free." Every "grant for women" that pays cash to a person and charges a fee to apply fails both tests.

That does not mean nothing exists. It means the money takes other forms: a benefit paid on a card, a grant paid to your school, a loan guaranteed by the government, a contract set aside for a business you own, or free counseling from a center the government funds. Here is each one.

WIC: the biggest program aimed at women, and the most under-claimed

WIC serves women who are pregnant, postpartum for up to six months, or breastfeeding, plus infants and children up to their fifth birthday. The income test is 185% of the federal poverty guidelines, which for July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027 works out to $29,526 a year for one person and $61,050 for a household of four in the 48 contiguous states. If you already receive Medicaid, SNAP or TANF, you are income-eligible without the math. You apply through a local WIC agency, not online with the federal government, and the benefit arrives as a card loaded with specific foods rather than cash. It is the closest thing to a "grant for mothers" that exists, and it is the one most of the listicles leave out.

The SBA: loans, contracts and counseling, never grants

The Small Business Administration does three things for women-owned businesses, and a grant is not one of them.

Women's Business Centers. A national network, 138 centers as of the SBA's July 21, 2026 announcement, that offers "free, to low-cost counseling and training" for women starting or growing a business. This is where a business plan gets written and a loan application gets prepared. It costs nothing to walk in.

Loans. The 7(a) program guarantees bank loans up to $5 million. The microloan program lends up to $50,000 through nonprofit intermediaries; the SBA says the average microloan is about $13,000 and rates run between 8% and 13%. Microloans cannot be used to pay existing debt or buy real estate. Both are loans. They are repaid.

Contracting. The Women-Owned Small Business Federal Contract Program lets agencies set aside certain contracts for certified firms. Certification is free at certifications.sba.gov. The business must be small under SBA size standards, at least 51% owned and controlled by women who are U.S. citizens, and managed day to day by women. The economically disadvantaged tier, EDWOSB, adds personal limits: net worth under $850,000 (retirement accounts excluded), adjusted gross income of $400,000 or less averaged over the previous three years, and $6.5 million or less in personal assets. SBA reviews complete applications within 90 days. A rule effective January 3, 2025 tightened control and outside-employment definitions and let firms already certified in the veteran program reuse that paperwork, but left the EDWOSB thresholds alone.

College: the Pell Grant and the 2026-27 changes

The Federal Pell Grant is the one federal grant that goes into an individual's aid package. The maximum for July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027 is $7,395; the minimum is $740. Two things changed for 2026-27. From July 1, 2026, Workforce Pell pays for short programs of 8 to 15 weeks and 150 to 599 clock hours, which opens Pell to certificate courses that never qualified before. And students whose Student Aid Index is at least twice the maximum award ($14,790) are no longer eligible, as are students whose other grant aid already covers their full cost of attendance. The FAFSA is free at studentaid.gov; the full picture is on college grants.

Programs with "women" in the name that do not pay you

Three federal programs come up constantly in these searches, and all three fund organizations, not people. Title X family planning grants go to clinics and health departments, which then provide low-cost services. The Title V Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant goes to states and territories for prenatal care systems and children's health programs. The Child Care and Development Fund goes to states, which run child care subsidy programs with their own income limits; the way in is your state's child care assistance office, not a federal application. These are real and worth using. They are not grants you receive.

The scam filter

The FTC's government grant scam page is short enough to memorize. "The government won't get in touch out of the blue about grants. It won't call, text, reach out through social media, or email you." "No government agency will ever contact you to demand that you pay to get a grant." And no agency will ask for payment "with cash, a gift card, a cash reload card, by wire transfer, or with cryptocurrency." The scams the FTC describes promise grants "to pay for education, home repairs, home business expenses, or unpaid bills," which is the exact vocabulary of the grants-for-women listicles. Report attempts at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For the benefits that do pay, the single mothers page ranks them by value, and the hardship page ranks them by speed.

Common questions

Are there government grants for women?

Not as cash to an individual. Grants.gov's own eligibility page says few of its funding opportunities are open to individuals and none provide personal financial assistance. Federal money that helps women goes to organizations, states and schools that run programs: WIC clinics, Women's Business Centers, Title X clinics, colleges paying out Pell. The one place federal money lands in a woman's own name is the Pell Grant, and it is paid to her school.

Does the SBA give grants to women-owned businesses?

No. The SBA funds 138 Women's Business Centers (as of July 2026) that provide free or low-cost counseling and training, it guarantees loans through 7(a) (up to $5 million) and microloans (up to $50,000, average about $13,000), and it runs the Women-Owned Small Business contracting program, which sets aside certain federal contracts. None of those is a grant to the owner.

What is the WIC income limit for 2026-27?

185% of the federal poverty guidelines, effective July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. For the 48 contiguous states and DC that is $29,526 a year for a household of one and $61,050 for a household of four. Being on Medicaid, SNAP or TANF also makes you income-eligible automatically.

How do I get certified as a woman-owned small business?

Free, through MySBA Certifications at certifications.sba.gov. The business has to be small under SBA size standards, at least 51% owned and controlled by women who are U.S. citizens, and run day to day by women. The economically disadvantaged tier (EDWOSB) adds personal limits: net worth under $850,000, adjusted gross income of $400,000 or less averaged over three years, and $6.5 million or less in personal assets. SBA says it reviews complete applications within 90 days.

How do I spot a grants-for-women scam?

The FTC's three tells. The government does not contact you out of the blue about grants, by call, text, social media or email. No agency ever asks you to pay to get a grant. And no agency asks for payment by gift card, cash reload card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency. The only complete list of federal grants is grants.gov, and it is free.
