The Access Wireless application is free and takes about ten minutes. Apply only at the official Access Wireless application, never through a third party and never for a fee.
Who qualifies for Access Wireless
One benefit per household, through a program someone in the household already receives (SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans Pension, or a Tribal program) or through income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guideline. The program route clears faster because it verifies against agency records automatically. Access Wireless serves 37 states; the ZIP check in the application is the final word for your address.
How to apply
- Check the National Verifier first if you live anywhere except California, Texas or Oregon. Access Wireless states this plainly on its support page: outside those three states you have to be approved by the National Verifier before you can enroll with them. Those three run their own state verification instead.
- Enter your ZIP on the Access Wireless enrollment page to confirm they serve your address. They serve 37 states according to USAC's own carrier data, but service is decided ZIP by ZIP, not state by state.
- Qualify through a benefit program or by income: SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans Pension, or household income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guideline. The benefit-program route clears faster because it checks automatically against government records.
- Pick your device path. Take the free Access Wireless smartphone, or run your own unlocked phone's IMEI through their compatibility checker and order a SIM instead. Their checker only accepts unlocked LTE 4G or 5G handsets. A phone still locked to another carrier will fail it.
- Track the shipment on the phone order status page, then dial 611 from the new handset once it arrives to finish activation.
Why Access Wireless applications get rejected, and the fix
- Enrollment rejects you before you have entered anything
Cause: Outside California, Texas and Oregon, Access Wireless requires National Verifier approval before enrollment rather than running the check inside their own application
Fix: Apply at the National Verifier on lifelinesupport.org first, keep the application ID it gives you, then come back and enroll. This trips up people who have used other carriers, because most of them run the check for you mid-application.
- You reach the wrong support queue and get bounced
Cause: They run two separate numbers, one for people who have not enrolled yet and one for existing customers
Fix: New applicants call 1-888-900-5899. Existing customers call 1-866-594-3644, or just dial 611 from the Access Wireless handset. Using the wrong one usually means a transfer and a second wait.

USAC's Lifeline carrier data lists Access Wireless in 37 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and West Virginia. The carrier's own site publishes no state list and only says offerings vary, so the ZIP check during enrollment is the real answer for your address.
