SafetyNet Wireless Free Government Phone: Plans, Devices & Support

Last verified: · by Arif

SafetyNet Wireless is the Lifeline brand of AmeriMex Communications Corp., a Florida company serving 26 states. It is worth knowing two things before you apply. Outside California its free tier is thin to the point of being nominal, 25MB of data a month in most states, and it charges a $25 activation fee that most Lifeline carriers do not. In exchange it publishes a fuller fee schedule than almost anyone else in this category, runs real weekend support hours, and documents protections for domestic violence survivors that most carriers leave unwritten.

Does SafetyNet Wireless give a free iPhone?

No. SafetyNet Wireless does not ship iPhones under Lifeline, and you get a free Android smartphone instead. See our free government iPhone guide for the providers that do.

How to apply

  1. Check the free tier for your state before anything else, because it swings wildly. California gets 4.5GB or 6GB at $0. Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Colorado, New York, Missouri and non-Tribal Oklahoma get 25MB. Wisconsin gets 100MB. Those are their own published figures, not a typo.
  2. Qualify through Medicaid, SNAP or CalFresh, SSI, LIHEAP, Federal Public Housing, Veterans or Survivors benefits, CalWORKs, a Tribal program, or income at or below 135% of the poverty guideline. LIHEAP and CalWORKs are on their list and are missing from several competitors, so this is a good option if energy assistance is the benefit you actually hold.
  3. Apply once and wait. Do not apply to a second carrier while this one is pending. Their own FAQ says a consumer who submits an enrollment request must wait up to 30 days before submitting another. Applying to three carriers on the same afternoon locks you out for a month.
  4. If someone hands you a phone at a street event or a table, understand that you are not enrolled yet. They run an agent channel, and their FAQ is explicit: you get 500 promotional minutes until the administrator approves you, then a text confirms your real plan. Plenty of people walk away believing they are done.
  5. Budget for an activation fee outside California. $25, published on their own plans page. California is $39 and gets credited back once you are approved. This is one of the few Lifeline carriers that charges activation at all, so read that line before you sign.

Why applications get stuck, and the fix

  • You got a phone at an event but service never started

Cause: Receiving the handset is not approval; the Lifeline administrator still has to clear you

Fix: You are on 500 promotional minutes until then. Watch for the confirmation text. If a week passes with nothing, call 1-888-224-3213 with the date and place you got the phone, because the agent submission is what may have failed.

  • Your second application is blocked for a month

Cause: SafetyNet applies the rule that a consumer must wait up to 30 days after one enrollment request before making another

Fix: Pick one carrier and let it finish. If you have already tripped this, the clock runs regardless, so use the wait to get your National Verifier documents in order rather than applying elsewhere.

  • Recertification rejected as too early, or missed as too late

Cause: Their window opens only 150 days before your anniversary date and closes on it, and the PIN needed to recertify does not always arrive

Fix: Diary your anniversary date the day you are approved. If the PIN never came, their renew page covers exactly that case. Lost your Application ID? Call the federal Lifeline Support Center at 800-234-9473, which holds the record.

  • Data is gone in the first two days

Cause: In most states outside California the free tier is 25MB or 100MB, which is minutes of ordinary browsing

Fix: This is the plan as published, not a fault. Their paid step up is $15 a month for 4.5GB in most states, $9 in Kentucky. If you need real data at $0, check which carriers in your state guide publish a gigabyte figure on the free tier.

Common questions

How much data does SafetyNet Wireless actually give you?

In California, 4.5GB or 6GB free, or 15GB for a $1 monthly co-pay. Almost everywhere else, 25MB. Wisconsin gets 100MB, Kentucky gets 1GB, and Oklahoma Tribal households get 4.5GB. Those figures come straight from their own two plan pages. If you are outside California and data matters, compare carriers before enrolling.

Does SafetyNet Wireless charge an activation fee?

Yes, and this is unusual for Lifeline. Their plans page publishes $25 for states outside California. California is $39 but gets credited back to your LifeLine account once you are approved, so it nets to zero there. The SIM card is free and there is no early termination fee.

What is the SafetyNet Wireless customer service number?

1-888-224-3213, or dial 611 from a SafetyNet phone. English support runs Monday to Friday 10am to 11pm Eastern and weekends 11am to 7pm Eastern, which is genuinely later and longer than most carriers in this program. Spanish support runs weekdays only. Note their broadband disclosure page lists a different number, 1-888-898-4888; the 888-224-3213 line is the one published on the contact page and in the site header.

What states does SafetyNet Wireless cover?

26: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Their state selector and USAC's federal carrier data agree exactly on this list. Their own About page confusingly says 15 states, and they publish actual plan figures for only about ten, so confirm what you would receive before you enrol.

Does SafetyNet Wireless give free iPhones?

No iPhone is offered or priced anywhere on their site, and their online store is still marked as launching soon. The Lifeline handset is described only as new or refurbished, one per customer per year, locked to SafetyNet for 12 months. You can bring your own unlocked phone instead; they publish step-by-step SIM and network-reset instructions for both Android and iPhone.

Is SafetyNet Wireless legit?

Yes. AmeriMex Communications Corp. is a Lifeline-authorized carrier and appears in USAC's official company data for all 26 states it advertises. Two things to read with open eyes: their coverage page still describes service on Sprint's CDMA network, which no longer exists, and their homepage claims 27 years of operation while the About page copyright starts at 2013. Uneven site upkeep is not fraud, but it is a reason to confirm anything that matters to you on the phone.
