You don't need a new phone to use Lifeline. The BYOD path ships a free SIM (or activates an eSIM) in the phone you already own, and it's usually the fastest route to $0 service. Two compatibility traps to check first, though.
The two checks before you choose BYOD
Unlock status. A phone still locked to your old carrier rejects any new SIM; carriers must unlock paid-off phones on request. Band compatibility. Run the IMEI checker inside the Lifeline carrier's application; it tells you before you commit.

Can I get free service on my own phone?
Yes. Every major Lifeline carrier supports BYOD: they ship a free SIM (or provision an eSIM) and your own phone gets $0 service. It's usually faster than waiting for a shipped device.
Which carriers support eSIM?
Life Wireless is the most-searched eSIM offer; support is expanding across carriers. Physical SIMs work everywhere. Check the carrier's BYOD step for eSIM availability on your model.
Why doesn't my phone work with the free SIM?
Two causes: the phone is locked to your old carrier (ask them to unlock it, which policy requires once it's paid off), or its bands don't match the Lifeline carrier's network. Run the IMEI check in the application before choosing BYOD.
Can I keep my phone number?
Yes. Porting is part of BYOD enrollment. Don't cancel your old service first; the port itself closes the old account.
